2nd Annual? This is the third time you're doing it? Thought this was the 2nd instance; so would be 1st Annual?

I had no idea this was such a contentious word! Check out the following discussion thread, and based on responses, I'd say it is the second annual sabbatical, even if some people would say you can't use annual at all as it's too predictive :)

I think that inaugural is the correct term for the first event, as it implies that it will recur again but does not absolutely mean that it will. There usually isn't much push-back from this.

The way I prefer to number things is (similar to birthdays or counting years):
The 1st event celebration was the day it was born (the inaugural, or year 0).
The 1st annual event celebration is when it turns 1 year old.
The 2nd annual event celebration is when it turns 2 years old.
etc...


For me, the very first time of the event is held is not counted in the annual calculation. So, if you started in 2005, you don't count that as an annual event. This way your 10th year would be 2015. Otherwise if you count 2005, your tenth anniversary year would techincally be 2014. And to me 10 years of an event should be 2005-2015 (not 2005-2014).

I guess I could (extremely reluctantly) say that the 2nd time the event occurs be referred to as the 2nd annual event; because (as it was pointed out to me) the word 'first' is misleading, whether I liked it or not. For if I was to read an invitation to a 1st annual event, whilst I know it should have been called the inaugural, I would not think that it was in fact the second time the event was occurring. So in essence it would then be Inaugural, 2nd Annual, 3rd annual, etc

But then again, I've seen the inaugural instance referred to as first annual. And that's just pretentious.

If the second instance is the second annual then surely logically the first instance must be the first annual? At least in hindsight. You might not call it that until there has been more instances. The first football World Championship wasn't called the first until there had been a second. 

IMO, "second annual" is always the second time something is occurring. I've literally never seen it being referred to as weathertop says.

Let me just put a vote in for Weathertop.  That matches my understanding, but I think popular usage does not agree with me.
