The map is well designed and laid out, the capital city element is very interesting, allowing for quick eliminations if you are not careful. The unit caps are well thought out and provide nice balance.
The only problem I see is turn order can play a major role, if you are one of players who goes later you run the risk of getting nailed (and essentially put out of the game) by someone who got their hordes bonus ripping through your island. Other than having a lot more neutrals in the satellite, airport and seaport, I am not sure how to solve that problem (well, the Scramble Scenario helps, but I enjoy the Standard Scenario much more).
I have played all three versions (Slow Start, Scramble and Standard). IMO, the slow start plays the more or less the same as the Standard, as you can use the capital's artilery power to get all the territories on your island down to 1 from the get go.
Typically plays pretty quick compares to other games and boils down to a few oppenents (or two) before the cards recycle back to 3 in most cases.
Versatile, intuitive, relatively fast, very deadly.
More like war, less like math.
Uses many of the special features available in WarGear (Capitals, fog, fortify & artillery borders, hordes bonus system).
You can play this board forever and still come up with new gambits. I suspect a couple of our more experienced players may have rated this board lower because the various unit caps mean that a thoughtful rookie actually can (and does) take down an otherwise dominant player by doing ridiculous stuff that no experienced player would try. (I know it's happened to me.)
With the fog, this is good, clean, relatively quick fun. Definitely a good, solid board to play over and over again. Don't rush to grab a capital unless you're in a rush to lose!
Contrary to what some of the reviewers have said, this board is playable without fog and actually surprisingly intense that way; having said that, I don't really recommend it. It takes a rather serious amount of luck and a willingness to avoid the capitals unless you are dead certain you'll keep them. I suspect turn order is also important, but don't hold me to that.
My rating is strictly based on playing the game with default fog settings.
This is a great board, but the original version is one of my favorites. The changes in this version are definitely interesting and make the game play significantly different. It does seem like the pace is quicker, which isn't necessarily a bad thing all the time. I'd like to see a version of the original on here at some point.
I perhaps haven't played this version of the board enough, but I think I'm a fan of the original more. The Capitals just don't feel right for some reason. A lot more of a "RUSH" feeling than I had in the previous and seems like the gameplay just doesn't develop enough.
The board does have a cool theme, cool abilities, cool movement and another amazing graphics job by Kjeld though, so be sure and try it out for yourself!
This is one of the maps that I am always excited to see my turn arrive on. I enjoy the island philosophy combined with a nice mix of different types of access to the other islands.. I have seen a number of different winning strategies. I am a big fan of the heavy fog and satellite situation, as well as the choice of whether or not to take your capital. Very fun.
