    Looking at one game I just lost...

    It appears there are two things you need:
    1. Lots of income early. By turn 3, there was already a -8 income differential against me.
    2. The ability to guess where you think your opponent will go for income and disrupt it.

    There's definitely a fair amount of luck involved, though.
